Battle of the Bands all summer in Seymour

By David Grimes

Don’t look now, but guess who’s hit the big-time.

You.

Big Mama’s Karaoke Café and the South Knox · Seymour Times are bringing you the Battle of the Bands, every weekend this summer, starting with the blowout Spring Fling beginning June 5 at the  Café in Seymour.

“We are very excited about this event,” said Norbert Stovall, CEO of Tennessee Production Center, Inc. (TPC). “It gives musicians of all ages and performance skills the opportunity to perform on a professional stage, showcase their talents to our community and also get the opportunity to go in a professional recording studio to make a great recording.”

All bands and all genres are invited to put their blazing licks and high-stepping kicks on stage at the Battle, which will take place on a state-of-the-art mobile professional lighting and sound stage at Big Mama’s Karaoke Café and a select group of Seymour and south Knoxville businesses throughout the season.

Got a band? Get practicing, because the contest is open to everyone. Don’t have a band? Then start one, because you know you can be a star, and the prizes for winners are enough to make any music-lover pick up an axe and power-chord away.

Two categories will be offered: “garage” bands, who play non-paying gigs or who’ve never had a public performance, and semi-professional and pro bands, who’ve already honed their stage skills before a paying audience.

In addition to the exposure, all bands will compete for a suite of fantastic prizes offered by TPC, Inc. First place in each category will receive a two-day recording session (20 hours) at Big Mama’s Recording Studio (bigmamarecordingstudio.com), 300 retail-ready CDs of the band’s session for the band to sell, a PA system with 4 microphones, 50 DVDs of the bands performance, and one song performance video to be posted all year at Big Mama’s and other entertainment websites.

Second and third place winners in each category will receive a one-day recording session at Big Mama’s Recording Studio, 100 retail ready CDs of the band’s session for the band to sell, 4 microphones, one song performance video to be posted all year at Big Mama’s and other entertainment websites, and a new electric guitar from Tennessee Production Center, Inc.

All winning bands’ videos will be submitted to the American Idol Band Contest for next season’s contest.

“Music is great for the soul and brings everyone together, all ages and backgrounds,” said Debi Stovall, president of TPC, Inc. “It’s the universal language. We hope this will bring members of the community together to meet and greet each other.”

One song from each band’s performance will be posted at karaokecafe.com for voting, where each performance can be downloaded to your PC or favorite handheld device. The online vote will be tallied along with the votes of a group of professional music industry judges to choose the winners.

And everyone can participate - come to each event to cheer on your favorites, enjoy the breadth of talent our area has to offer, and win prizes just by being there. Drawings will be held throughout each event, and prizes such as a mini-chopper motorcycle, compliments of Real Deal Motors, “Your ATV Connection”, free karaoke CDs and more.

The finals will be held Saturday, August 25 at Big Mama’s Karaoke Café in Seymour, where “Everyone’s a Star”.
